plural: fundamental forces
A fundamental force is one of the four forces of which all other
forces (outside of elementary particles) are forms. The fundamental
forces are (in order of decreasing strength):
- the strong nuclear force, which keeps protons and neutrons
together in the nucleus of an atom and plays a role in almost all
nuclear reactions.
- the weak nuclear force, which plays a role in spontaneous
radioactivity.
- the electromagnetic force, which keeps electrons and nuclei
together in atoms, and plays a role in all chemical reactions and in
electrical and magnetical forces.
- gravity, which tries to keep mass together.
